Have you seen some of our Learning?

 1 December 2021

Did you know?

In 1898, December 1, the first movie was shot in New Zealand.

The first motion pictures were taken by photographer W.H Barlett. (Researched by Neha)

We are learning loads of information about ourselves and others. We have learned that Ruru birds/Morepork birds are only seen at night. The female birds are larger than the male birds. They only live in the mainlands of New Zealand, where they can live up to 5-11 years.

Learning @ Room 9

Woohoo! Celebrations

Around the world people celebrate events which are relevant to them. Celebrations are a time which brings happiness, joy and laughter to our lives. Today is no different. Although we sit in a Level 3 - Step 1 lockdown to battle Covid-19, there is still an opportunity for us to Celebrate.

In Mexico, 31 October celebrates __________________, which acknowledges ___________________. However, in America, 31 October  they celebrate __________________, which acknowledges ______________. Tell us about both celebrations and its significance to people.

In NZ last week, on the 4 November, we began to celebrate ____________, which is the short name for ____________. This celebration is normally celebrated with bright colours all over the world but more commonly in India. It is a celebration which brings lots of joy to many, but why do we celebrate it? What do you know?

All over the world, on the 5 November, they celebrate ______________, but do we know where it started and why people celebrate. Tell us about it's history and think critically about why you think people celebrate. Should they? What are its effects on our society? How do you know?

We also celebrate on a daily basis, all over the world - a day where there is someone born every minute. What is this celebration called? Although some people do not celebrate this day, we talk about how differences and identity matter. Tell me about the significance of this day and what your thoughts are about them.

Reflecting on What is now, my Normal...

As the morning sun rises, the deep sigh of relief as another day begins in our learning and the yearning we have for what used to seem as normal.

Normal ... what is normal? Is being in lockdown for yet another day our normal. There used to be a time where the classroom chatter would be my background noise. The rushing and the babble of voices as our morning routine is suddenly interrupted by the piercing ringing of the bell. "Āe, mōrena koutou! Kia tau, kua tangi te pere, kia whakapai tātou!" would be my first sentence out after that bell.

The hustle and bustle of students preparing themselves for the day ahead, and for their learning. The routine and the smooth running of the classroom only interrupted by latecomers. "Whaea, may I have another pen please?" - a question that used to irritate me because it was repetitive. "Āe" would be my reply "It is during S.O.D.A, Whaea", followed by a chuckle replies the student. S.O.D.A, a term I only learned at my previous school. Wow! What I would give to hear that question now. Do we truly take for granted the small interactions we have on a daily basis?

Is this my normal? It has been two days since Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern made her announcement that 'Auckland would remain in the current Level 3 Lockdown situation for a further 2 weeks!' and since then my norm has been so different to what I remember. WE can remember the tastes we miss, the people we hugged and the beautiful waiata we would hear at mihi whakatau and pōwhiri. Is this my normal?

My normal at the moment consists of lots of google meets, lots of time on my devices and luckily for me, time with my family bubble (our new norm).  My routine all has changed, and it will continue to be that as much as we are in lockdown. For the safety of my mokopuna and for my whānau, I will continue to do as much as I can to ensure we are free from harm.

What about yours? IS this, your new normal? What do you miss?

Nau Mai, Hoki Mai - Welcome Back to Term 4

Kia Ora Koutou

Kia Ora, Kia Orana, Malo e lelei, Ni Sa Bula, Namaste, Talofa Lava, Fakalofa Lai Atu

Ka mihi ahau ki a koutou katoa.  Ko Lorraine Makutu ahau, aa, Ko Whaea Lorraine raanei.

I feel very privileged to have been welcomed to Edmund Hillary this morning to begin a new journey. Although I have taught in other schools, I hear Edmund Hillary is the place to be. This term, like every other terms is going to be filled with Learning and Laughter.

I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Challenge Time

'Ko wai au? Ko wai koutou?'

As a class, you can ask me 3 questions you would like me answer about myself.

Criteria for questions:
